The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) was reformed and there is a new EYFS framework that all schools and settings will have to follow from September 2021.

There are some elements of the EYFS that have not significantly changed and some that have.

Below are some of the key points from the new EYFS reforms that include relevant changes which parents, carers and children may notice or experience.

• Staff will be spending less time on large amounts of written observations and assessments for evidence collection. This means they can spend more time supporting and engaging with the children and their learning and development needs.

• Children will no longer be assessed against statements from an age band category. Instead, staff will use their experience and knowledge to monitor if a child’s learning and development is on track for their age.

• There is an emphasis on improving children’s language and vocabulary through increasing opportunities for conversations, reading of a wide range of books and holding discussions around activities in other areas of learning.

• Safeguarding and welfare of children is still a priority, with the added mention of teaching children about the importance of good oral health and how to keep teeth clean and healthy.

Curricular Cycle

We developed a cycle that demonstrates how the unique elements of our provision work together to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for the children at the Pre-School.

It starts with our main ethos of child led learning and planning in the moment.

Core Texts and Rhymes

Over the course of their time at Domino Pre-School we chose a selection of rhymes and core texts that children will become very familiar with. Below you can see the list of our choices and the reason for our choice.

Planned opportunities

Staff plan a weekly dance, music and Forest School sessions that also form part of our curriculum.

We plan a number of experiences and trips through out the year that give context to the children’s learning and opportunity for them to learn and apply new skills.

Curricular Goals

We have 7 key learning outcomes for the children that we have in our Pre-School. We devised these through consultation with the parent population and all members of staff.

Here you can download a full version of our curricular goals. You will be able to see each stage of learning along the way to achieving the planned outcome. Staff will assess children when they start as a baseline and then track their progress each term against these goals. We aim that all children will achieve the final stage of these goals before they make the transition to primary school.
